An assessment task for the current unit in my Master of Education is to create and share a Knowledge Networking (KN) Artefact. The artefact is to define the targeted audience and provide a quality learning experience about the chosen topic for viewers (wherever they may live globally). Knowledge networking was the overall theme, from which we selected a specific topic on which to focus. The needs and learning styles of our target audience directed this focus.
I targeted vocational educators for my topic, with digital curation as the focus area. As a lot of my work with vocational educators is supporting their understanding and usage of online learning, my aim was to use the artefact as a springboard to further facilitation. After researching a range of perspectives on digital curation, I outlined the major aspects before putting an instructional video together. While I feel the video instructs viewers about what digital curation is and how and why they should consider it for their professional practice, I think it could be simplified. There are a couple of sections where I have recorded a screencast of my screen while I am using two curation tools that may be a little overwhelming. I think I was conscious of the time frame (3-5 minutes), and so tried to stuff as much information in there as possible. As Coco Chanel said, “…look in the mirror, and take one thing off.” I think I should have followed this rule for the video. In relation to the criteria set for this artefact, I have critiqued it below. Understanding of the nature and features of the tools used To develop this video, I used several tools, chiefly Camtasia, but also Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The screencast was created using Camtasia, recording operations on both Pinterest and Wakelet. I also used Snagit for image capture. These are all tools I use in my work daily. I think I have demonstrated a thorough understanding and competent use of each of them. A quality learning experience which engages a global audience The information and imagery used in the video are all sourced from quality, scholarly articles and blogs, and the topic is relevant to vocational teachers globally. Any vocational educator could use this video to inform their network building activities, and a transcript is provided in case of hearing impaired, or non-English speaking audiences. Videos are ideal for instructional use as they afford multiple reviews, including pausing to try out elements for themselves. The artefact caters for the target audience with creative and innovative elements There are several different kinds of animated effects in addition to two screen casts, providing the target audience with and engaging learning experience. Viewers do not merely read words on a screen, but are immersed in a learning experience designed to provide the basics of digital curation for both their professional use, and to incorporate into classes for their students. Comprehensive knowledge of instructional design elements While the screen is quite busy from time to time, there is also ‘breathing space’, allowing viewers to consider what has been presented. Text has been kept to a minimum, and emphasised and enlarged to maximise clarity. Narration is included to explain major points more thoroughly, usually accompanied by good quality, relevant images. Evaluation, analysis and synthesis of KN theory Throughout the video my aim was to firstly explain what knowledge networking and digital curation are, and why they are important to the vocational educator in their professional practice. I have emphasised the importance of connecting with others and alternate perspectives, including examples of how this could be achieved to benefit students. Major influences and existing or emerging factors Numerous important names in knowledge networking have been referenced while developing the video, with factors such as leveraging global opportunities of virtual gallery or museum visits and similar activities highlighted. Teachers are made aware that there is a whole world of knowledge available, all they have to do is reach out for it. Sophisticated application of theory into practice in the creation of an innovative, engaging and practical digital asset The video pulls together elements such as static imagery, video clips including screen casts, animations, text and narration to supply an interesting and engaging learning experience. It is expected that viewers might view the video several times to try out for themselves some of the elements, and with that in mind, it can act as a springboard for a hands-on workshop.

A great digital artefact Karen, well done! You obviously have an indepth knowledge of the tools used and have connected them well to make the presentation. It is very applicable to your target audience.
