Photo by Hal Gatewood on Unsplash I teach vocational trainers about incorporating elearning into their teaching, including workshops on using the range of tools they have available, and suggested best practice for different requirements. Many of these learners come to my classes with limited understanding of how and why to incorporate elements of elearning, as well as the functionality of the tools they could employ. PowerPoint is streets ahead in terms of popularity because it is easy to use, can keep their teaching organised, and has flexible outputs Moodle is the Learning Management System (LMS) of my institute, which is often underused. Lesson is a module within Moodle, which has many of the advantages of a presentation application, such as the ability to display text, images and video, with the additional option of incorporating activities such as forums, questions, links to other websites. Using Lesson enables teachers to flip the classroom and have their students complete passive reading and watching activities at home, while providing greater engagement through questions or adding to wikis. Lesson also provides a branching functionality, enabling it to be used as a decision-making activity to simulate real-world scenarios such as what to do in the case of a fire outbreak, or chemical experiments. H5P is another application teachers can use to provide greater engagement and interest to learners, as it offers a range of activity types, and mix of text with images in a modern, streamlined and attractive interface.
