The information life cycle is commonly portrayed as three stages: creation or acquisition, dissemination and the decision to keep or remove the asset (Beal, 2019). With the overwhelming deluge of information available to us, managing information is more important than ever (Tallon & Scannell, 2007). In the 1.1 blog post, the author reflects on the challenges of the quantity of the information now available, mentioning the importance of both curation and classification (Atkinson, 2019, March 3a; De Saulles, 2015). In the Topic 1.2 discussion post, the author highlights the importance of equipping people with skills including discernment and analysis to minimise the flood to a manageable level, to participate safely and to judge the quality of information (Atkinson, 2019, March 3b; Brown & Duguid, 2000; Floridi, 2009). Skills of creation and curation are emphasised as being critical to contributing to a knowledge network and enhancing one’s profile. Using skills to decide what information is worthy of attention, how to use platforms and crowd-sourcing information is referred to in the Topic 1.3 discussion post, emphasising the future direction of information management as one of collaboration and cognition rather than memory (Atkinson, 2019, March 8; Open Media Lab, 2013, 18 October; Rheingold, 2010).
The ability to find the information, tool or resource required is a core skill for modern educators and learners alike. In blog post 1.2, the author discusses the differences between how various age groups of people search for information and particularly the way young adults prefer to collaborate with peers (Atkinson, 2019, March 7). In contrast, after finding a digital tool for example, the author will experiment until she has understood the basics before deciding if it is worth pursuing or discarding, depending on the experience (christiansarkar, 2008, 20 December). During the unit INF532, the author has explored numerous digital tools and platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. These explorations are discussed in blog 2.1, discussion topic 2.2 and discussion topic 2.4, particularly methods for incorporating these platforms into teaching practice (Atkinson, 2019, March 16, 2019, March 17, 2019, March 19). Blog 2.3 explains the author’s experience starting with Twitter, including the benefits to one’s PLN development (Atkinson, 2019, March 18).
In blog post Let the Tweeting begin, the author discusses the benefits of using Twitter (Atkinson, 2019, May 20b). There are aspects of curation, creation, discernment and reflection leveraged by using Twitter as a component of one’s PLN. Discovering and using Tweetdeck improved this experience, enabling greater control and simplified search capabilities: a revelation! Following and being followed by other educators has connected the author to a global community she hadn’t realised even existed prior studying this unit. In blog 4.4, the author explains her use of Pinterest, Pearltrees and Google Keep as tools for both curation and collaboration (Atkinson, 2019, April 2). The author provides usage examples, in addition to listing the tools found to be useful, summarising consideration criteria for use when choosing tools (Bell, 2018, April 2; Good, 2014, January 7). In discussion topic 3.4, strategies that can be incorporated into the vocational classroom are discussed, including the flipped model, MOOCs and the school in the cloud (Atkinson, 2019, March 25b; Cormier, 2010, December 8; Gerstein, 2012, July 18; TED, 2013, February 27). Having initially approached Twitter apprehensively, the author now feels much more confident, having grown her network to 21 followers and following 79 users. Using this experience to inform the artefact produced for assessment two, in her critique the author explains the potential for use in a face-to-face workshop (Atkinson, 2019a, 2019, May 20a). The author expands on the ‘flipped’ model as related to her experiences in vocational education in discussion topic 5.1, and discusses the essential elements of peer-to-peer learning in blog 3.4, illustrating the concept with a diagram (Atkinson, 2019, April 4, 2019, March 25a; Corneli, Danoff, Pierce, Ricuarte, & Snow Macdonald, 2016; Oddone, 2016, March 15; Topping, 2005). The artefact also demonstrates a range of instructional design elements, such as leveraging the viewer’s existing knowledge, demonstrating use and providing examples of how they could incorporate the concepts into their own practice (Devilee Whish, 2019). Throughout the blog posts, the author has endeavoured to make them as engaging and relevant as possible with a range of images, links, videos and original assets used. The artefact demonstrates the author’s ability to use and deploy a range of digital tools. For the blog post on Developing an instructional asset based on digital curation, the author created a graphic to assist learners access digital tools and platforms according to their needs, based on research and downloadable to enable the links (Atkinson, 2019, April 12b; Orendorff, 2018, June 27). In the discussion post topic 6.2 the author examines instructional design for online learning as relevant to her cohort of learners (Atkinson, 2019, May 5a; Blannin, 2015; Topping, 2005). In this post, the author discusses a range of strategies that can be used depending on the learner cohort, and the reasons for selection. In addition, discussion post 6.4 outlines future plans for improving the author’s practice and for enhancing learning experiences (2Revolutions LLC, 2012, March 1; Atkinson, 2019, May 5b).
By engaging with her PLN, the author demonstrates consciousness of maintaining awareness of emerging ideas and innovations in education, including diverse approaches, strategies, tools and resources. Many of these the author has found through Twitter, such as Silvia Tolisano’s tweet on curation and the Hidden Brain’s podcast on teacher/student connection (McGuirk & Penman, 2015, October 13; Tolisano, 2019, May 19). In the blog post 4.2 Establishing a knowledge network the author explains how to start with knowledge networking, and in 7 Curation Tips, the author provides the asset as well as links to her artefact and Wakelet profile, adding to collective knowledge about content curation (Atkinson, 2019b, 2019, April 12a, 2019, March 27). To manage the content in Wakelet, the author has categorised the items and made the site public. Content such as 10 eLearning Design Principles Infographic in the Learning Design category and Awesome Design Tools in the Digital Tools category were found valuable with the author implementing the information into her own work as a learning designer for vocational education (Dziuba & Havruliyk, n.d.; Elearning Infographics, 2014). To contribute to the professional growth of others, the author provided critiques of the artefacts of two peers, Karla and Tanya, in the unit discussion forum, and commented on other's blogs (Atkinson, 2019, May 22a, 2019, May 22b, 2019, May 10a, 2019, May 10b).
